Bellator 31 recap: Megumi Fujii & Zoila Frausto win

In the first women's 115-pound tournament semifinal bout of the evening, Zoila Frausto squeaked out a controversial split-decision victory over Jessica Aguilar to advance to the finals.

Early concerns about Frausto's tough weight cut proved unneeded as the Team Jorge Gurgel product stayed light on her feet and, in fact, almost entirely on her bicycle. (Frausto missed weight by four-tenths of a pound on her first attempt and came in at an acceptable 116 pounds on the second try.)

Aguilar spent the majority of the fight chasing down her opponent, though she bucked expectations that she would use her grappling abilities to take the fight where she had a paper advantage. Instead, she jammed in on Frausto and played the striking game.

What transpired largely was a point sparring affair, with no more than three strikes thrown per exchange. It appeared, though, that Aguilar landed a greater number of clean punches while avoiding Frausto's bombs.

As the fight wore on, Aguilar began to time Frausto's constant circling and sneak through a straight right hand that scored consistently. Frausto, meanwhile, played the hit-and-run attack and landed several stinging leg kicks, though she never managed to rock the American Top Team fighter with punches.

In the fight's final frame, Aguilar turned up the pace and chased an increasingly tired Frausto with strikes. A right-hand left-hook combination caused the most damage to Frausto, who began to bleed out of her nose. Running low on options, Frausto dove twice for takedowns and nearly walked into a picture-perfect guillotine as the fight came to a close.

It appeared to be a clear-cut victory for Aguilar, who earned her semifinal berth with a submission victory over Lynn Alvarez. But in a bizarre tally, two judges gave the contest to Frausto (8-1 MMA, 2-0 BFC) with 30-27 scores. The other dissented completely and awarded Aguilar a 30-27 mark. Aguilar (9-4 MMA, 1-1 BFC) was stunned, and the audience vocalized its displeasure.

In the other women's semifinal, undefeated sensation Megumi Fujii left no doubt in Lisa Ward's mind that she is the superior submission fighter.

Ward claimed she never tapped to an armbar Fujii applied in their first meeting more than three years ago in the now-defunct BodogFIGHT promotion.

This time, she most certainly tapped. Fujii (22-0 MMA, 3-0 BFC) starched her with a flurry of punches, got the takedown, and gained mount within two minutes. A first armbar attempt was blocked by the cage, but the second gave Ward (14-6 MMA, 2-1 BFC) no choice but to submit.

Danielle West: Interview

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, now living in London, England 33 year-old MMA fighter Danielle West is getting ready to fight on October 2nd in a rematch against Maria Hougaard.

Growing up Danielle did not have the easiest of childhood's, having lived in foster care for a portion of her youth, she did not play much sports except for some soccer from ages 10-12.

I asked Danielle why she became A fighter and she mentioned her teenage years when she was into the slam dancing scene and how she got into a lot of street fights during that time.
But the first time that she ever fought came about because her ex-husband was a writer for full contact fighter and he would take her to the fights, one day at one of the fights she was at the announcer asked the women in the crowd if there was anybody willing to fight the ring girl at their next event. Danielle thought to herself, "I could beat the ring girl." So she began training and a few weeks later the ring girl beat her, but Danielle was hooked.

Danielle has been training MMA eight years now and she trains at Fuzion MMA in London, her coaches are Matt Chapman and James Evans Nicholle. She does Cardio and weight cutting at Concept Fitness. Olaf Ingermarsson is her boxing coach and she trains with Kathy Gifford in wrestling. Her training consist of boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, and wrestling. She trains six days a week, while maintaining a full-time job and raising a teen age daughter.

Danielle "Batgirl" West has a pro MMA record of (2-1-0). She has had many injuries as a fighter mostly in training, including two dislocated ribs, two broken noses and she has broken her foot twice.

In her first fight with Maria Hougaard she dislocated her ribs during the fight but still managed to finish Maria off with a rear naked choke.

On Saturday at Fightergalla 16, in Denmark Danielle will give Maria a rematch. This will Danielle's first fight since she defeated Maria in April of 2009. Maria on the other hand was making her pro debut in that last fight and has fought four times sin then. The fight will be at a 150 pound catch weight, Danielle will be cutting from 175 pounds. Although Danielle knows this fight will be totally different from their first fight, she is confident that she has improved during her time off.

Shana Olsen vs. Julia Budd

Canadian Muay Thai Champion Julia “The Jewel” Budd will make her pro MMA debut as part of the October 22nd Strikeforce Challengers 11 card.

The British Columbia native, who is the only woman to ever defeat Gina Carano in Muay Thai, will face Shana “Rock Solid” Olsen at 145 pounds.

News of the fight was first reported by The MMA Show with Mauro Ranallo on Wednesday evening. MMARising.com has since confirmed that the fight is signed.

Olsen has won all four of her MMA bouts to date and is on a short list of title contenders for Strikeforce champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos.

Jessica Aguiar: Interview

Jessica Aguilar  advanced in Bellator’s 115-lb tournament on August 12 when she defeated Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez by arm-triangle choke four minutes and one second into the first round. Just a week later, Zoila “Warrior Princess” Frausto  eked out a decision win in a bout against Muay Thai specialist Jessica Pene. The two will face each other in the semi-finals at Bellator 31, taking place this Thursday at L’Auberge du Lac Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Although some have painted the American Top Team Fighter as an underdog, Aguilar is extremely confident going into this fight.

Mei Yamaguchi vs. Kyoko Takabayashi

Just two days after Valkyrie 7, Greatest Common Multiple has already announced a pair of title fights for its next all-female card at Valkyrie 8 on November 28th. Valkyrie Featherweight (115-Pound) Champion Mei “V Hajime” Yamaguchi will defend her title in a rematch with top contender Kyoko Takabayashi. Yamaguchi edged Takabayashi last July.

Michele Gutierrez vs. Lacey Schuckman

Wand Fight Team prospect Michele “Diablita” Gutierrez will take a step up in competition when she returns to action on December 10th. Gutierrez will face Strikeforce veteran Lacey “The Ladie” Schuckman in a featured bout at Crowbar MMA: “Winter Brawl” in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Gutierrez earned a dominant third-round stoppage of Tammie Schneider at “Fall Brawl” on September 11th and has now won three straight fights since dropping her pro debut in November 2009. Schuckman has won two of three fights since her lone Strikeforce appearance last September.

Sarah Kaufman: Interview

Canadian Sarah Kaufman ponders the difference in dancing "The Nutcracker" and cracking skulls in a cage, and is quick to appreciate fighting's low-maintenance ways.

"You don't have to worry about fake eyelashes and putting your hair back in a bun," she laughs.

Most ballet dancers wouldn't trade dolling up for potentially getting strangled unconscious. But Kaufman admits that girls who fight are a bit nutty as she preps for her 135-pound Strikeforce title defense against Holland's Marloes Coenen on Oct. 9 in San Jose, Calif.

Kaufman has never been afraid to try something new. Kids rarely choose a career in cardiovascular surgery in grade school or don painful wooden pointe shoes for ballet class at only 8 years old.

"When I do something, I don't do it for fun, per se," Kaufman said. "I do it to get to the highest level I can."

Tamikka Brents: Interview

Tamikka Brents is a 22 year-old, 5'3 150lbs amateur MMA fighter, who fights out of Springfield, Illinois.

Tamikka was born in the Philippines, on a naval base where her father was stationed, she only lived there a few years until her and her family relocated to Springfield, where she has lived ever since.

When Tamikka turned of age she decided to follow in her fathers footsteps and she joined the Navy. During her two years in the Navy she was stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois and San Diego, California.

Growing up and in high school Tamikka was very athletic she played basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and ran track.

I asked Tamikka why she became a fighter, she replied, "My brother started training MMA first and me and him use to watch it  on T.V. and we would grapple and imitate the moves, I started to know them so well that he brought me into the gym and I started training."

Her favorite male fighters are Matt Hughes and George St Pierre and her favorite female fighter is Gina Carano.

Tamikka trains at Warrior Concepts in Springfield, Illinois where she is coached by Scott Ward and her brother pro MMA fighter Bobby Brents.

I asked Tamikka what her strongest discipline was and she said because of her brother coming from a wrestling background it has rubbed off on her ad made her a good wrestler.

At Warrior Concepts Tamikka is the only female and trains with men, she doesn't mind though saying it helps her to be prepared for whatever she might face in a fight. Her training consist of, but is not limited to cardio, pad work and 10 round sparring sessions both standing and on the ground.

Her  record is currently 5-0-1. Her most recent fight was on September 18th at NAAFS: "Eve Of Destruction" in Akron, Ohio, where she took on Tera Carper and dominated her before beating her by TKO (ground and pound)

Tamikka fought at 153lbs for her last fight but her goal is to be able to make 145lbs before she turns pro.

She is in no rush however and wants to get as much experience as she can before she turns pro.

A perfect next step for Tamikka would be the upcoming Tuff-N-Uff 145lbs tournament, hopefully Sam Wilson will consider adding this top prospect to the tournament.

Aside from MMA Tamikka is a lover of traditional dance and works at a bar as a D.J.

Seven days after she faces Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight (135-Pound) Champion Sarah Kaufman in California, Marloes “Rumina” Coenen will battle Lena Buytendijk at Ultimate Glory 12 in Amsterdam. The October 16th fight was officially announced by Golden Glory trainer Martijn de Jong today.

Coenen will carry a huge edge in experience into the bout with Buytendijk, who was submitted by Sheila Gaff in her pro debut in March, but it remains to be seen what condition Coenen will be in following the fight with Kaufman on October 9th. Injuries could potentially cancel the Glory 12 bout.

Elaina was originally scheduled to take on Ashley Nee, who would have been making her pro debut, but she was unable to take the fight. Elaina is coming off of a victory at Raging Wolf  9 against Alexis Davis. The match was scheduled to be for the 135lbs title but Elaina missed weight by a few pounds.

Sarah is undefeated and is coming off of a September 11th armbar victory over Raquel Pa'aluhi.

Ashley Cummins: Interview

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Ashley Cummins is a 23 year-old women's MMA amateur fighter.

Ashley has been involved in combat sports since she was five years old and began training in taekwondo. She trained taekwondo until she was eighteen years old.. I asked her if training taekwondo for thirteen years had helped her in her MMA career, she replied that it has not helped her much in MMA except for in her flexibility.

I asked "Smashly" as she is nicknamed, why she became a fighter and her answer was, " I always wanted to be a fighter since I was in high school, but my parents wouldn't let me so when I turned 19 I started training."

Standing 5'3 and fighting at 115lbs Ashley walks around at 125lbs, I asked her if she could ever make 105lbs and even though she feels she could make 105lbs, she feels 115lbs is the right weight class for her.

Ashley trains at St.Charles MMA and Vaghi Martial Arts, she has been training MMA four years and her coaches are Mike Rogers (MMA), Rodrigo Vaghi (BJJ) and Fuad Keranovic (Muay Thai). Ashley trains six days a week, twice a day up to eight hours a day. Her training regimen consist of cross-fit (cardio), MMA, wrestling, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu, where she is getting ready to receive her blue belt this week.

She is undefeated in MMA at (7-0-0) and has a Muay Thai record of (4-3-1)

Ashley in her short time in MMA has accumulated three championship belts that are proudly displayed at her gym. She won the 120lbs mid-west fight league championship against Brittany Marsall for her first title.

In April she took part in the Tuff-N-Uff 115lbs championship tournament and defeated Cathy Snell in her first round match, then a month later defeated  Gabriella Lakoczky to become the first ever Tuff-N-Uff 115lbs champion.

On September 18th Ashley took part in the Hook-N-Shoot 115lbs same night tournament, where she defeated Kahlah Baker by 2nd round armbar and in the finals she defeated Jessica Laubacker by unanimous decision, for her third title as a amateur.

With such great credentials one would think that Ashley "Smashly" Cummins is ready to turn pro, but her answer when I asked when she would turn pro was. "A lot of people rush into turning pro, but I'm in no rush and I would love to defend my Tuff-N-Uff title one more time, I'd say I'm about a year away from turning pro."

Ashley Weakley: Interview

On Sept 24th at the The Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Tuff-N-Uff will be holding the final round of two women’s tournaments in the 125lb and 135lb divisions at their Future Stars event. Both tournaments started off on July 2nd with eight women in each division. Now down to two in each division, fighting out of Virginia will be 26 year old Ashley Weakley.

Ashley has been a competitive athlete her whole life in multiple sports including gymnastics, softball, Olympic weightlifting and boxing.Ashley is also proficient in acrobatics and weapons training, including being a full instructor in Kali a Filipino martial art that teaches stick and knife combat. She was also a student of Jeet Kune Do the martial art founded by Bruce Lee.

When Ashley was asked why she was given the nickname "Baby Tyger" by her friends she replied, "Because just like a baby tiger, I don't look mean but the moment you underestimate me, I will attack you."

Ashley began training in Women’s Mixed Martial Arts nine months ago at L.A. boxing in Chantilly, Virginia where she trains full time for MMA with an elite staff of coaches including Leo Dalla for BJJ, Dino Phillips for strength and conditioning and Dave Reeves for MMA.

She has an undefeated record of 4-0 heading into the Tuff -N- Uff 135lb. Championship Title Fight on September 24. She is 5'8 and her walk around weight is 145. Even though she only cuts 10lbs don't expect to see her fight at 125lbs, because she feels 135lbs is where she is strongest.

The road to the finals of the Tuff-N-Uff 135lbs tournament began with a unanimous decision victory in the opening round of the tournament over Emily Kagan on July 2nd. Then on August 6th at the semi-finals of the tournament Ashley defeated Jillian Lybarger with a very impressive darce choke.

As the finals draw near and T.J Cunnaan awaits Ashley did mention she has watched T.J's fights at home but was not willing to talk about her strategy going into the fight but did say that the after party that she will be hosting at "De Ja Vue" Erotic Lounge will in fact be a victory party.

Future, plans for Ashley include pursuing a full time career in acting and stunt work. She is confident that her experience and the publicity from competing in Women’s MMA will open up opportunities for her to achieve her future goals, while still allowing her to chase her dream of dominating the 135lb professional weight class, which she hopes to join in the beginning of 2011 and in her words "Hopefully Ill be fighting for the Strikeforce 135lbs title by the end of 2011.

Marloes Coenen: Interview

After her third-round knockout win over Roxanne Modafferi in July, Strikeforce 135-pound women's champion Sarah Kaufman said she should be fighting on one of Strikeforce's main card, not in a Challengers event.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker listened to Kaufman and now her second title defense, against Dutch fighter Marloes Coenen, said she should be fighting on one of Strikeforce's main card, not in a Challengers event.

"It's definitely where the title fight should be and we should be getting main-card slots," said Kaufman during a conference call Friday to promote the event. "People should be seeing us. I'm glad to be fighting on the bigger cards. I have to thank Showtime, Strikeforce and the fans who pushed for this."

Sportsnavi posted an interview today with Megumi Fujii and her number one protege Ayaka Hamazaki. Of course in Japan, Megumi is more than the top female MMA fighter in the world. NAAFS: “Eve Of Destruction” Play-By-Play

The North American Allied Fight Series holds its first all-female event tonight at the Chapparells Community Center in Akron, Ohio. The event is headlined by a 125-pound pro bout between Jessica “Evil” Eye and Marissa Caldwell and also features some of the top female amateurs in the area.
