Elaina Maxwell vs. Ashley Nee

Elaina Maxwell (4-3-0) will take on  Ashley Nee (0-0-0) in a 140lbs match at Absolute Action MMA presents 'Battle Against Breast Cancer' on October 2nd.

Ashley "No Limit" Nee trains at Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy and is making her pro debut. Her amateur record is (2-1-0)

Elaina is coming off of a victory at Raging Wolf  9 against Alexis Davis. The match was scheduled to be for the 135lbs title but Elaina missed weight by a few pounds.

Jenny Yum: Interview

On Sept 24th at the The Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas,

Tuff-N-Uff will be holding the final round of two women’s tournaments in the 125lb and 135lb divisions at their Future Stars event. Both tournaments started off on July 2nd with eight women in each division. Now down to two in each division, fighting out of Charlotte, North Carolina is 27 year old Jenny Yum.

Jenny has been training MMA for 3 years at Hard Target in North Carolina, where she is coached by Rob Hunter.
When I asked what her specialty was she said she is an all-around fighter, who trains equally on all aspects of MMA.

I asked her what made her want to become a fighter, she replied, "I joined MMA because I liked watching it on T.V. so I called Hard Target up, came in and started training."

Jenny fights in the 125lbs division and since she walks around at around 127lbs she does not cut much weight, which is always an advntage for a fighter.
She did also mention that she would consider fighting at 115lbs.

Her record is (6-1) and even though most fighter databases have her listed as (6-0), she was very forthcoming, when telling me about her only defeat, which by the way was her second fight and was taken on only a few days notice.

In Jenny's previous two fights in the tournament she has looked very impressive, on July 2nd at Tuff-N-Uff "Future Stars of MMA", she defeated Nicole Hess by unanimous decision.

Then on August 6th at "Xtreme Couture vs. Team Quest" she became a YouTube sensation when she delivered the best spinning back fist KO ever seen in WMMA. The knockout has been viewed on YouTube over 23,000 times.

I asked Jenny about the spinning back fist and I was surprised to hear that she had never used the move in a fight before. She and her coaches had noticed that Lindsay Jones tended to move to her right and like they thought, she walked right into it.

In the finals of the tournament on September 24th, Jenny will face Stephanie Eggink, a former amateur boxing national champion. Jenny expects the fight to remain standing but says she is ready for anything.

As far as a future in MMA right now she is just doing it for fun and is not looking too far ahead, but did not rule out turning pro, especially as a amateur champion.

Erin Toughill Withdraws From Fight In Singapore

Just two days before she was scheduled to face China’s Bao Yu Dan, Erin “Steel” Toughill has withdrawn from Martial Combat 9 in Singapore. Toughill cited a broken clavicle as the reason for pulling out of the 155-pound fight, which has now been scrapped from the card entirely.


The development is the latest in a series of fight cancellations and disputes that Toughill has been involved in since signing with Strikeforce in 2009. She was thrice scheduled to compete for Strikeforce, but fights failed to come to fruition on each occasion and the injury is yet another setback.

Marloes Coenen: Interview

Marloes Coenen is rebounding nicely from her TKO loss against Cris "Cyborg" Santos. Coenen is scheduled to fight Sarah Kaufman for the women's Strikeforce Welterweight Title on Oct. 9th at the HP Pavilion. This will be her second straight title fight in two different weight divisions.

It appears that Strikeforce is very fond of Coenen. Who can blame them? Coenen is exciting to watch because she is always looking to finish a fight. Only four of her twenty-one fights have gone to a decision.

MFF: 1) Why do you fight?

EK: "Combat sports are the only sports I’ve ever excelled at. I think its because they take a level mental toughness and an ability to endure pain that simply doesn’t exist in the more mainstream sports. My athleticism is only average, so I never excelled at the traditional girls sports, but I have always been pretty fearless and I don’t mind taking a beating. And a lot of fighters don’t admit to this, but I really do take pleasure in beating the crap out of someone, whether it is my opponent, male sparring partners, or even my own sister. I am definitely in touch with my primitive violent instincts and some times violence just feels good."

MFF: 2) How did you get into fighting?

EK: "I followed my younger sister, Katy Klinefelter, into the boxing gym when I was 16. We had no clue what we were getting ourselves into, we just wanted to try something new. We knew absolutely nothing about boxing, we had never even watched a boxing match on TV before and had no intention of ever getting hit or hitting someone else. After a few months at the gym we just copied what the guys did. The guys sparred, so we sparred. The guys fought at local shows, so we did too. After a while we realized we were pretty good at boxing so we just stuck with it. After a 7 year amateur boxing career (which included winning 13 National tournaments and 2 international tournaments—including the 2006 Pan Am Championships) I turned pro in boxing. After a year or so in the pro ranks I was just not happy with the number of fights I was getting. Boxing is nearly dead in Iowa and I was used to fighting 10-12 matches a year, like I did in the amateurs. I decided to try to take up MMA just to get more fights, because during my time in boxing I saw that boxing was declining and MMA was on the rise. I had my first amateur MMA fight in December of 2008, had 7 amateur fights, and turned pro in November 2009."

The buzz surrounding Michele Gutierrez of Wand Fight Team and the Vixen Crew has been growing louder within the last few months. It began in May at MMA Xplosion in Las Vegas when she rebounded from her pro debut loss with an impressive knockout of her second opponent, Amy Stacey, within 17 seconds of the first round. At her following fight, August 14th at XFO in Chicago, she was once again victorious, winning a unanimous decision against challenging opponent Cassie Roddish, a last minute replacement Michele knew nothing about except that she was a Muay Thai fighter. "She had really strong kicks. I won every round. I just kept my distance with her, and kept her at the end of my punches. She was tough. It was a good experience for me to go the full fifteen minutes and experience what it's like to go the entire distance."

Paulina Ramirez defeats Stephanie Frausto

Paulina "Sweetness" Ramirez (2-0-0) defeated Stephanie "Macaquinha" Frausto (2-3-0) by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

That fight was a pretty good one. The first round was almost entirely clinchwork and Paulina was clearly much stronger than Stephanie. However, Stephanie landed a nice flurry in the final seconds and I felt that that (plus some solid knees in the clinch) might be enough to barely steal the round.

Stephanie clearly won round two and Paulina easily won the final round. It all came down to round one and the judges favoured the cage control over Stephanie's late flurry. To be honest, I had Paulina winning round one all the way up until the end and probably should have given her the 10-9. Stephanie's flurry only partly landed anyway.
